Since 1991, Heritage Vancouver has worked to help communities understand and participate in sustaining Vancouver’s heritage by speaking out about city heritage issues and policies, contributing to public education through community events and online resources, and providing a voice for diverse stories that shape our city.

OUR VISION

We believe that our heritage sites and community landmarks are tangible expressions of our past that contribute to the character, attractiveness and quality of life in our neighbourhoods. We want to create a diverse and inspiring place to live through a thoughtful layering of new and old, physical and non-physical qualities. We believe that sense of place, public memory, and community connections are significant in sustaining the fabric of our city.

OUR PRINCIPLES

We are: 

• Independent from government and private corporate interests, and guided by our principles
• Knowledge-led and informed by current best practices and approaches in the international heritage field to ensure that our understandings and approaches to heritage have a principled basis
• Civic-minded and centred around public benefit, looking for places where heritage can intersect with societal needs and concerns
• Inclusive and collaborative by listening to, engaging, and working with different communities
• Diverse and representative of the different values and stories that make up Vancouver’s socially and culturally important places
• Member-based with active engagement, conversation, and participation
